The ICGEB invites applications for the post of Senior Accountant
POST TITLE: Senior Accountant
DUTY STATION: Trieste, Italy
DATE REQUIRED: 1 May 2026 (tentative)
TYPE OF CONTRACT: Fixed term appointment
DURATION: Initial probationary period of three months, with possibility of one-year further extensions subject to satisfactory performance.
LEVEL: GS-5 (UN Salary Scales)
DUTIES: Under the overall authority of the Chief, Legal and Administration and direct supervision of the Chief, Financial Services, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
• Provide support for the coordination of activities within the Unit;
• Assist in the preparation of financial statements in compliance with the Organization’s Financial Regulations and in accordance with IPSAS accounting standards;
• Provide assistance in addressing requests, recommendations, and observations raised by the Internal and External Auditors;
• Oversee the timely closure of accounts; monthly and year-end;
• Review and certify all bank orders related to payments of invoices, salaries, fellowship and consultants stipends, travel reimbursements and other disbursements; authorize all payments and bank transactions as required;
• Review source documents to ensure completeness, accuracy and validity of charges; investigate and correct erroneous charges as necessary;
• Act as back-up for the Senior Accounts Assistant responsible for payments and bank transactions through the home banking system;
• Act as back-up for the Senior Budget and Finance Accounts Assistant responsible for verifying and importing into the ERP system all salaries and stipends related to Core and External Funds across the three Components;
• Act as focal point for any accounting process, issues or guidance between Trieste, New Delhi or Cape Town financial units;
• Perform other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• High school diploma or equivalent;
• A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting and team coordination support;
• At least five (5) years of hands-on experience supporting the preparation of financial
statements;
• Working knowledge of SAP ERP essential;
• Knowledge of Business Intelligence tools is desirable.

• Client Orientation: responsive to internal and external stakeholders; provides reliable financial support and guidance;
• Accountability: takes ownership of assigned responsibilities and delivers high-quality outputs under minimal supervision;
• Adaptability: comfortable working in a multicultural and dynamic environment, adjusting to new technologies and organizational processes.
LANGUAGES: English essential, Italian is an asset.
